PPIs discontinuation after erosive esopaghitis therapy won’t cause heartburn again or even worse

Previous studies said that increased excessive acid secretion through indicator of Gastrin levels which may cause Heartburn can re-occur if the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) discontinued in the patients who already have erosive esopaghitis therapy, including can cause acid-related symptoms if stopped for a while.

However, from recent study conducted by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania said that the effects doesn’t like that.

According to current study authors, increased gastrin levels after PPIs discontinuation will return to normal within a month and remain flat thereafter.

The results of this study were reported in the American Journal of Gastroenterology on August 16, 2011, and based on reviewed data from 4 phase III trials involved 287 patients with a negative indication for Helicobacter pylori.

While there is no long run of increased gastrin levels, it also not shown rebound symptoms after discontinued use of PPIs.

However, current researchers caution that this results is not for the effects of PPIs therapy discontinuation in long term.

They suggested that physicians keep follow 2008 guidelines of American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) that states “empirical therapy with PPIs is considered appropriate to initiate therapy in patients with uncomplicated heartburn.”
